I'd have to say Jonathan Brandis, because as a kid(well preteen I suppose), he was one of my favorites, and as an adult I'd quit keeping up with things Hollywood, so I didn't find out that he'd hung himself until a couple of years after the fact. Not really big time news, but it was a shock to me.

I would have to go with John Ritter also.
I thought Christopher Reeve's wife death was a shock.

Chris Farley, I remember growing up I always was the class clown and I always quoted his lines and impersonated scenes from all his movies (even though I'm a girl), anyways when I was twelve or thirteen I was at a sleepover at one of my friends houses and we decided to go to the grocery store for snacks, when we got to the front to check out I saw the headline on the daily newspaper and almost burst into tears, I always dreamed of being a comedian like him and wanted to be on SNL and meet him one day I thought we would be good friends, that was just a childhood dream, but his death really saddened me!

I am from India and I am now in my 80s. I was shocked by the recent news of passing away of one-time Stunt Queen ;Fearless Nadia' She was the heroine of our childhood fighting half a dozen males and overcoming them all, jumping down from uppermost floors bu even jumping up from below to the uppermost ones. And coming out from the engagement unscathed--even there was not a fold in her startched clothes. Her most famous role was in Hunterwali in which she t amed the ruffians with a leather hunter. Her cry of triumph still reverberates in my years after all these years. In a period where women were condemned to never-ending subordination Nadia made a refreshing exception. Not a very beautiful or even feminine t ending almost to be masculine and sporting non-Indian features like blond hair, green eyes and while skin she nevertheless appealed to us.She did not put in any histrionic performances but still endeared herself to one and all of us.

River Phoenix was the greater shock. There are some that saddened me as much, but their deaths were more or less expected.

I think Rick James' death shocked me more since he was just on TV not long before. And Johnny Carson as well.

For me it was Michael Landon and John Ritter. I grew up watching them and I took both of their deaths very hard.
