More than likely a bad starter motor. Strike it with a hammer - not too hard -like you were putting in small tacks, a few times then try again. If it now works the starter is just about worn out. Another thing could be bad connections in the battery leads, check them including the negative one at both ends.

When you say won't crank, do you mean the engine starter will not turn? Or that the engine turns but never starts? A clicking sound without the starter turning could mean not enough voltage/current to the starter or a bad solenoid or starter motor.

check for power to the starter. make sure its a full 12 volts or more. no power, control circuit problem. with power, replace starter motor. low power charge or replace battery.

check the starter, see if thats kicking over. check your belts and hoses.
