I've Lived there for three years,and I liked it,but Its probably changed a lot by now.I was there in 93 to 96,there's a lot of Casinos,and bars and stuff, but there's a lot of sight seeing as well.I don't know what your in to,but the herbs are very cheep and most of the time free,if you know what I mean.

particularly in Thamel area - that's touristic area, it is nice. Outside Thamel, it is just normal urban area. Personally I like it except the traffic.
If you want to continue climbing everest or doing anapurna trek, that's the best place to buy all the equipment - they are damned cheaper than in europe absolutely.
