So I've heard that you have to wait until your baby is a year old before you can cut their hair for the first time. Could someone explain why; and how old was your baby before their first hair cut? Thanks

I wouldn't go by age, but by length. As long as their hair isn't in their eyes, or bothering them for some other reason, I would let it grow. During the toddler stage, you have to be careful cutting their hair because they just move too much! My son was 15 months when he got his first haircut and it was a disaster. He wouldn't sit still and was so upset over it. I would prolong the experience until later if you can.

When you do get it cut, let your little one watch others get their haircut first, so they know what will go on and that it won't hurt. Distract them if you can too. If you can, try a kid friendly place. We went to one that was playing Elmo on their tvs and completely kid centered to get through his second haircut. good luck!

A lot of people just like to wait until the baby is a year old. It's not that you HAVE to. I cut my son's hair at about 8 months...just when I noticed that it was getting a little long in some places. But it all depends on your baby. You can cut their hair whenever you want.

Waiting until the baby is 1 year old to cut their hair is a " old wives tale". It has nothing to do whatsoever in concern to the baby's health. I cut my daughter's hair at 1 month old cause it was so uneven. Today she has a thick full head of hair and always has. I don't know where that old wives tale came from, whether is religious or bad luck garbage.

When there hair is long enough that it needs cut. My friend's baby got his hair cut for the first time when he was 6 months old, and he's normal and healthy. If you still concerned I would ask your doctor

For boys most people like to wait until their 1st birthday and keep the curls as mementos in the baby book. My son was not quite 1 year, but his Dad was a barber and couldn't wait to get him in the barber chair. hahaha My husband cut one little boys hair on his first birthday and years later the little boy came in as a man to have his own little boys hair cut. Pictures were taken both times. I think it is a wonderful tradition. I wouldn't cut the baby's hair unless he/she had enough to cut.

Um... it just depends on your child.. how much hair he/she has. My daughter is almost 3 and we have not had her hair cut yet. She hasn't really ever needed one.. why push it if they don't need one? She is starting to need a trim though, her hair is starting to be uneven in the back. So, I think it just depends on your child. If he/she has lots of hair and looks like he needs a cut, then get it cut. I wouldn't think he would need anything done before he turned 1 though. Talk with your doctor about it... he can give you a better idea of the before age one thing. There might be health risks involved or something, I dunno, like I said with my daughter... she still hasn't had a hair cut yet..lol.

Your son's hair sounds just like my little boys. When he was about 10 months his hair was so long it went past his shoulders when wet, but when dry it was extremely curly. We trimmed his bangs at Best Cuts I believe, and then after his first birthday we buzzed all his curls off. Be prepared though the curls usually don't come back :(
