My friend (who is here) is nauseasous from his hangover and has a bad headache. What are some good home remedies? I think it's bad because during the course of the night he drank a good amount of three different hard liquors, Grey Goose, Hennesy and Rum. Would this make it particularly bad?

I suppose I feel flattered by the couple of the attempts to try and analyze drinking in general or why he consumed a lot of alcohol. It is irrelevant. But if you must know, we were celebrating and this person is not an alcoholic. There is no underlying problem and it was not done as way of alleviating depression.

Well, if you could get a cortisone shot from a doctor, you'd get a bit of relief from the swelling in the brain.
I never did. Back when I could drink enough to get a hangover (before it started interfering with my sleep and just making me feel yucky) vomiting helped if I could do it early enough. Sleeping it off is good if you can.
I also used to listen to the REM album "Automatic for the People" when I had a hangover. It did nothing to help my symptoms, but the whole album sounds like a hangover feels, like being just slightly out of synch with the rest of the world. If you look at the photos in the liner notes, the guys all look hungover, too.
In the end, the prevention is much more effective than any remedy. Mixing the type of hard liquors was not your friend's problem. It was the amount and the alcohol content. He might want to stick to beer and wine for the time being, and not go too crazy with those.
And he might want to answer the following question in the interest of prevention. "What was happening *right before* you took your first drink?" I've got a hunch there's some kind of situation there that needs to looked straight in the eye, not drowned out with alcohol.

A few New Years ago. I think it was 2002. I was living in Japan, and a Japanese friend of mine wanted me to get up before the sunrise, drive to the eastern-most edge of the island (Okinawa) and watch the sunrise on the New Year. So that night, a different friend and I, plus my husband, celebrated New Years Eve by getting trashed on champagne and wine and singing karaoke. Went to bed sometime around 3 am. My smoke detector went off for some unknown reason around 4. Scared the crap out of me! Fell back into a drunken stupor, only to be woken by the alarm clock at 5 am. Got up, still mostly drunk, and drove for about 40 minutes to watch the frickin sunrise. I've never felt worse in my life lol.

The first thing is, he needs to get hydrated, so water is the first remedy. A sport drink like Gatorade will help as well since it will help get his electrolytes up again. Fruits are also good since they contain a lot of water and electrolytes. A vitamin might also be helpful to help him recover. For his headache, I guess an aspirin should help. And finally, yes mixing liquors is not a good idea, it does make you worse. I hope he gets better.

Ya gotta hydrate yourself. Drink plenty of water and take 600-800mg of Motrin (Ibprofren).
My suggestion to prevent further hangover- over the course of the night, drink a bottle of water a couple of times, and rember to take the motrin before crashing for the night. When you wake up, start again with water and motrin.
