Women usually get an ultrasound around 18-24 weeks gestation. If the doctor suspects twins (your mothers history or an abnormal result from routine prenatal blood tests) they may order one earlier.
Its the same with twins as it is with one baby. I do believe you are able to see two sacs (if twins) as early as 7 weeks gestation.

That depends on when you have your first ultrasound. My doctor does an ultrasound at the first visit, around 6-8 weeks, to determine getational age and get a good idea of the due date, especially when a woman has irregular cycles. An early ultrasound is the most accurate way to get an accurate due date if there is any question. Anyway, when they do an ultrasound, they should be able to tell how many embryos/fetuses are in your uterus. Sometimes women also find out they are having twins if the doctor hears two heartbeats using a dopplar. In addition, if your blood levels of certain hormones are particularly high that can also be an indication of a multiple pregnancy and your doctor will typically do an ultrasound at that time to determine the case. If there are twins in your family or you have some other reason to believe you might be having twins, bring the issue up with your doctor. He or she may be willing to do an ultrasound to calm your fears and settle the issue.

I think most people find out when the doctor starts to listen for a heartbeat...they usually hear more than one and will do an ultrasound to confirm. Around 5 weeks or so

I think it is the same as finding out the sex of your child, between 16-20 weeks. Talk to your doctor for an actual specific time that you can do an ultrasound to find out.

When my doctor did my first pelvic after I found out I was pregnant (5 weeks pregnant) he felt my uterus and said, "Wow! You are definitely pregnant". At my first ultrasound at eleven weeks (vaginal ultrasound) it was undeniably twins. Now they are 5 years old.
