Begin with either the following,

Paint Shop Pro uses the basic of colouring and outlining objects. (1)

Adobe Flash 7 allows basic animation with still frames and pictures. (2) Techniques and teach yourself methods below.

Effec3D Studio and listed below are similar mix of the aforementioned. (1) and (2)

Continued and focused learning thereafter,

Serif 3D & Animate Graphics Effect Studio is a step towards basic fundamentals used in industry.

When purchasing any of the above, enquire through schools for discounted prices. Failing which, approach the retailers and ask for a "lite" or starter pack.

As a hobbyist, freelancer, or small to medium sized studio you can use Blender as a low-cost alternative to Maya ($125/month), ZBrush ($800), and After Effects ($20/month).

Try the Microsoft Puzzle Collecton games. There's a game on there called Jewel Chase, and its so fun! It has 99 Levels! I tried to do all of it, but then at Level 79, my eyes were so red and I played on there for 4 Hours, and aI just quit and dozed off to sleep! Its really fun! There's also 9 more different but fun games on there with lots of levels too!
