When it came to mathematics, time and calendars, the Maya were geniuses. Believing that time repeated itself in cycles, they devised two calendars, one ritualistic, which was used for religious celebrations and astrological predictions, and the other a solar calendar. Both calendars were based on the calculation that a year had a little more than 365 days, a more precise system than the Gregorian calendar. Following the movement of the sun, moon and stars with such accuracy, the Maya were able to predict such mystifying phenomena as eclipses and the Spring and Autumn equinoxes. The Great Cycle started in 3114 BC and ends in December 2012.
Mr. Carlos Barrios, a historian, anthropologist and investigator has studied with traditional Mayan elders for 25 years since the age of 19, and became a Mayan Ajq'ij, a ceremonial priest and spiritual guide, Eagle Clan. He confirmed that the world will not end and set some info on the road ahead.
...The date specified in the calendar ‹ Winter Solstice in the year 2012 ‹ does not mark the end of the world. Many outside people writing about the Mayan calendar sensationalize this date, but they do not know. The ones who know are the indigenous elders who are entrusted with keeping the tradition.
… "Humanity will continue," he contends, "but in a different way. Material structures will change. From this we will have the opportunity to be more human."
… We are living in the most important era of the Mayan calendars and prophecies. All the prophecies of the world, all the traditions, are converging now. There is no time for games. The spiritual ideal of this era is action.
… Many powerful souls have reincarnated in this era, with a lot of power. This is true on both sides, the light and the dark. High magic is at work on both sides.
… Things will change, but it is up to the people how difficult or easy it is for the changes to come about.
… The economy now is a fiction. The first five-year stretch of transition ‹ from August 1987 to August 1992 ‹ was the beginning of the destruction of the material world. We have progressed ten years deeper into the transition phase by now, and many of the so-called sources of financial stability are in fact hollow.
… The banks are weak. This is a delicate moment for them. They could crash globally if we don¹t pay attention. One critical period is October and November 2002. If the banks crash in these months then we will be forced to rely on the land and our skills. The monetary systems will be in chaos, and we must then rely on our direct relationship with the Earth for our food and shelter.
… The North and South Poles are both breaking up. The level of the water in the oceans is going to rise. But at the same time land in the ocean, especially near Cuba, is also going to rise.
Whether there is truth in the Mayan calendar predictions or not, remains a great mystery. Will probably will have to wait and see.

The Mayan Calender is a pretty big subject, as it was complicated. The main cycle ran for 260 days. It was often combined with one that ran for 365 days. There were seperate calenders to deal with things like lunar cycles. It isn't something that can be explained in a short answer, but you might want to check out the links below for more details.
We've lived through many end of the world predicitions and the world is still here, so I wouldn't worry too much about the 2012 date.

the myans did not predict an end to the world. the myan belief was that everything ran in phases. the moon, the seasons, and time itself.
the end of the myan calendar symbolises a new beginning not an end.
now it may very well be the end of our time here. but the world will go on.
some predict the return of the myan gods to walk the earth as men.
i think that it will coencide with the Earth changes that are predicted by the Native Americans. that man will be forced to live a tirbal lifestyle and live in harmony with the land. i think that nature will run rampant and destroy many cities. but this will happen over many years, not all at one time like the proverbal judgment day.
scientists predict that at that time the magnetic poles of the earth will begin to shift. this could cause mush of the destruction and problems that many believe will happen.

Before Jesus was taken up into heaven he said that no one except God the Father knew when the end of the world would be.
I find the Mayan calendar interesting in it's preciseness as to when the world began and when it will end, and in terms of it's use of solar, lunar, and venutian systems for determining lengths of time.
But for the end times, I find the book of Revelation, the last book in the Bible to be the most encouraging. It's not about the date, but about the event, and not just about the end, but about a new beginning. It's not focussed on time, but on the Lord of time,
Jesus Christ, the lion of Judah, the lamb of god, the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords and the reign he will institute for good and for always.

Does anyone really know with the Internet? With some of the information it is suggestive that someone much more knowledgeable shared this information with them so future generations would see it. It has been suggested of some galactic shift or alignment that might cause a major shake up in our solar system. Unless you know any extraterrestrials who do know it's all guessing. Besides we still have a few years don't we? Maybe not.
