Diapers have been used ever since there were small children, but the disposable diapers were invented by Marion Donovan.
The word diaper originally referred to the type of cloth rather than its use. Diaper cloth was originally linen. The first known reference is in Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew : "Another bear the ewer, the third a diaper". This usage stuck in the United States and Canada, but in Britain the word nappy (short for baby napkin) took its place.

In addition, disposable diapers are often referred to as "pampers" at least in the US and Russia, from the popular brand.

Replacing a soiled diaper is commonly referred to as "diaper changing." Not being a pleasant task, it is often the topic of humourous conversation.

Disposable diapers have only been around since the late 60s. Everyone used cotton, similar to the diaper service type.

I don't know, but once they figure out that disposable diapers are harmful to the environment, I'd like to suggest a nursery with shredded newspapers, wood shavings or straw bedding on the floor and in the "manger."

I'm not sure if you mean disposable diapers, or ALL diapers. Before disposable diapers were here, they used cloth diapers. And before that, I'm not quite sure.

Other cultures just let their children stay naked, which seems like a better, cost-efficient way. They sure would potty-train faster!

Have a great day!

well when i had my kids, it was called terry toweling, clothe fastened with a safety pin, a bit like origami,
like folding a napkin like you get in a posh restaurant. time consuming, but worth it i loved to see those Nappy's billowing in the wind, all pure white, meant i was a proud mother, these so called diapers/nappy's.. god knows what they are doing to the environment. saves time, agree, but in years to come?

The spin, shake and toss method. Probably explains the high infant mortality rates in the past.

before the cotton diapers, I'm sure any cloths suited for this purpose were most likely used.
And in cave days, I suppose the little babies would crawl around and poop wherever it suited them....
