14 upwards in my opinion, but not left alone overnight. Then I would say 16.

For questions like this, what country you live in is really important.
In the UK there is NO law stating an age limit. Part of the reason for this is that all children mature at different ages and some 15 year olds would not be trusted as much as a 10 year old. A child can be left on their own at any age depending on the maturity of the child. so if you really trust them and they know what to do in an emergency etc, then you are free to do so.
HOWEVER, if someone calls the police or social services about this then they may disagree with your judgement and can then take you to court - can't remember the actual law - and this can obviously be a problem. But many children of secondary school age (11 years upwards) are alone when they get home from school. (School hours and work hours just don't coincide plus finding childcare is a nightmare!)
In addition, there is no law about the age a child can be left to look after another. The same provisos above apply. However if you are employing a babysitter it is best to ensure they are over 16 years of age. If they are under 16 then the parent can be taken to court if anything happens to the child as a result of negligence/ abuse by the babysitter. Over 16 and the babysitter is prosecuted.
But as a general guide, don't leave young children on their own EVER. And don't leave older children (teens) on their own for too long ie more than two to three hours. They don't like it either a lot of the time. So that totally cuts out leaving the kids at home whilst you go on holiday. No doubt of that: neglect is what you would be charged with and abandonment.
Of course, once someone reaches 16 they are an adult in certain terms and can, therefore, be left without question. It's all very strange.

I think the legal age is 13 years but it depends on how mature your children are. Some are fine left for a short while at 11 or 12 while others still cant be left at 14 or 15. It varys from child to child but its not good for any child to be left to their own devices for long periods of time.

You should check your state laws first of all. In my state the legal age is 12. But younger children cannot be left with them until the supervisor is even older. This is not widely known law in my state, but it exists & you could get a visit from child welfare if you get caught violating it.
Secondly, it depends on the child and for how long. Some kids could be left alone at 12. Some kids should never be left home alone.

It all depends on the child. I had a babysitting job at 12 years old. I was left alone at age 9. my sister and I were very trustworthy kids and very smart for our age. If you think that they would know what to do in an emergency or if you can trust them not to get into trouble, then they can be left alone.

depending of where you live, but i was once told by a policeman friend that for a child to be left on their own for a few hours the legal age is 14 yrs, and 14 to be able to babysit other children, but only for a few hours, and 16 to be left over night on their own.
