The best way to lose weight is to do some aerobic exercising, like jogging, spinning, aerobics, etc.
The ideal time doing these activities to actually start burning fat is 20 mins (working out continuosly) because it is after this period of time that the body depletes the calories that are immediately available for burning (whatever you ate on that day) and starts using the body calories reserve= fat.
Also take care of your diet. Don't eat too many carbs or calories at night because you don't need them when you go to sleep. Therefore, the body will keep them and transform them into fat.

It's not a matter of time it's a matter of what. To really lose weight you need to vary your exercises but one rule is to go by the heart beats per minute chart. It's posted in most gyms and shows you the fat burn target and cardio target. You'll need to learn to time your heart's BPM and most treadmills, walkers, etc. do it for you.
