my question is.......what breed of horse is best for rodeos/endurance racing/ranch work/trail riding? i want a calm horse that will be fast but only when i want it to be......i think a quarter horse is best but i want other peoples opinions too

Quarter horse. They usually have a lot of cow sense in em which makes them good at rodeos and ranch work. Since they do ranch work then they will usually be out for long periods on time which makes them good at endurance and trail riding. If you want to barrel race or pole bend with your horse then a quarter horse is still a good idea because they got their name from being extremely good at quarter mile races. They can pick up speed quickly but dont know how to naturally conserve it so they can go about a quarter mile maybe a little farther at full speed.

Quarter Horse is the best because it is breed into most of them! Also a Paint. They are pretty to look at and can be just as good if not better then a Quarter Horse
Also get a Gelding or a Mare because they are calmer and more loving. Stallions can be cool and fast to but they are usually only conserned with one thing, breeding and you don't want that. You want a horse that is focused on you. Oh and also when looking around for a horse make sure you ride it before you buy it, this will asure you a good chamiponship.

I don't think breed is as important as type. You could do all of the above sports on a single breed, but primarily you want one that is physically able and has a calm temperament. Look for one that is of a quarter horse body structure, but many Thoroughbreds, Arabians, Apps, Morgans and others are built very similarly. Look for deep chest, structurally sound legs, good feet. Ride the horse or have someone you trust ride before purchasing, to be sure you wouldn't have to invest more money in training, looking for such things as standing still while you mount or dismount, neck-reining (Western riding), stopping and backing on command. For rodeos or ranch work, sidepassing, half-passes and other extras are great, but you won't likely find that in the everyday riding horse. A horse for endurance needs to be a little lighter than a stock horse if you expect to consistently finish as Best Conditioned (with exceptions, of course). I'm particularly fond of the QH/Arab cross.

If you want a purebred, you might want to go with a QH or a morgan, but honestly, I would suggest a cross. A good cross for all that you listed there would be a Quarab (I think they are even registerable now) - QH/Arabian cross. You will want to make sure it has a nice big hip for your ranch/rodeo stuff (and I have seen a lot of very successful Arabians in those fields, if they are built right). The Arabian will give you the distance and stamina for your endurance racing. Arabians were basically evolved for distance riding. Quarter Horses are sprinters, they were developed (and named) originally for the 1/4 mile race.

A Morab (Morgan/Arab) would also serve you well. Morgans are an excellent breed, they tend to be sound of mind, and have really good feet - essential especially in an endurance horse, but for any performance horse.

If you get a horse with Arabian blood you want to be sure to buy it from a reputable owner, who understands Arabians. Their minds are different. They are incredibly smart, and very sensitive, and you have to treat them well. Many people who don't understand Arabs think they are stupid and crazy, but in my entire life with horses (which has een my entire life), my kids horses tend to be the Arabs, and my Quarter Horses are the crazy ones, so go figure. I like both breeds, but I think Arabs are tougher. Not stronger, necessarily, but tougher. QH's tend to be more forgiving, and as such, you can get away with being less of a horseperson when you handle them. You cannot beat an Arab into submission, from what I have seen. That's why I like them :) They demand respect.

I would go with a crabbet Arabian , They are well suited for what your looking for And they are alot more solid then their egyptians cousins. But not as solid as your Quarter hose that may struggle with endurance , I have seen Arabs win rodeos and cutting events they are very versitile horses. And they can go all day ! Depending on your price range you can get some amazing western trained Crabbet Arabians!

The thing with Arabians is they dont like changing owners too much , So you do have to give them the time to get to know you , And they can be nervouse during this time , but if you give them your time and trust they will return the favor.

And you will have a best friend for life.

Do not be a person that sterotypes arabs or any horse for that matter , I have a 6yr arab mare who is only green broke an i put begginners on her , because she is so quiet,

Hi. I have 20 horses, so yes, I think I can help you. A quarter horse is good, and here are some other suggestions: Shetland Pony (good for riding, but not tough riding) Tenessee walkers (good for riding, ranch work, and weening horses. Weening horses is when you seperate a baby from it's mother( you probably already know that but just incase.) My best suggestion for you would be a Tenessee walker and quarter horses.

the best one is the quarter horse. they are good for all that you want to do. i own 3 of them and i do all types of rodeos with them and they do great. i tried to use my arab and my thourghbred and they did not do so well, it is because of their body structure and it didn't work out for any of the events that i did. so i went with my quarter horses and they did alot better because they are built stronger and they can tolerate all the events that i wanted to do and more. so the best breed is the quarter horse. good luck in your rodeos and endurance and all that you want to do.

A Quarter Horses, to get a horse like that you need to work him, do not let him walk on you correct bad behavior, and train train and train some more, it does not happen over night.
