You really shouldn't ever stop sterilizing the bottles the germs are not good for them at any age.

After the first couple months it isn't as important anymore. Think about it, how many times a day does your child put something germy in it's mouth. I know that the 6 month old I work with puts everything in her mouth if I'm not paying close enough attention. It's pointless at this point to sterlize her bottles, but that's how we get them clean, we don't hand wash, or use the dishwasher. Besides she eats from bowls and spoons that we used in the dishwasher, so really it's not any different. I guess it's a personal choice.

My daughter was born 20 years ago and the doctor told me that I didn't have to sterilize the bottles then. What gives have they started that practice up again?

I sterilize bottles when I buy them. After that you don't have to, just make sure you wash them in hot soapy water. I used the playtex vent aire bottles and that's what the instructions were.

You should sterilize before you use them for the first time. Check with your doctor regarding the need to continue. Most drs. will recommend this is unnecessary if your infant is full-term and healthy. Preemies & immune-compromised babies will probably need them sterilized each use.

I have 3 kids and I only sterilized for about 2 months. My children are all very healthy and always have been. I partially contribute that to not going crazy over protecting them from germs. I figure the more they are exposed to, the stronger their systems will be.

From what I have read, you don't have to do this after the first 3 months. Rather than go through this hassle, I plan to use a disposable insert bottle system - Playtex nurser.

When you buy news ones you always sterlize them. No matter how old the baby is.

but once you've sterilized them and so long as you keep them clean, you dont have to keep doing.

No one in our family ever did... and we had no problem raising healthy children.

it depends on your child, is he or she a premature baby?, i have four children, they are all teenagers now, but i stopped at different ages, my oldest, i stopped when he was 7 months old, my last son, i stopped when he was a year old, because of him being premature, he needed everything to still be sterile up to a year. Its your choice, ask your doctor also. good luck.
