this is a mc question and the answer is 51.5g/mol.But I don't know how it is derived.

Suppose that the Atomic mass of the metal is Am. Atomic mass of oxygen is 16, so if you have 1 mol of the oxide it's mass is:

2*Am + 3*16 = 2*Am + 48 g

Now:

In 100 g of the oxide the 68.4 g are M
In 2*Am + 48 g of the oxide the 2*Am are M

100*2Am = 68.4(2*Am + 48) <=>
200*Am = 136.8*Am + 3283.2 <=>
63.2*Am = 3283.2 <=>
Am = 52 (approx.)

O has a molar mass of about 16 g/mol

so 16*3=48

that means (100-68.4) 31.6% of the mass is oxygen.
