I don't know that you really need to spend the money to overclock, just make sure to get a lot of RAM, and you will not save as much money as people are telling you by building your own, that is only true if you are buying a high end computer.

Wheather your a gamer or not, build your own. I have a gaming friend that dropped over $4,000 on a Alienware which is just retarded, and I have another friend who just runs multiple programs at once and needs alot of power. He when out and built his own and he has a much better pc than my gaming friend and it cost him about 40% less. I also built my own, this is half the fun of owning a pc, I also built a couple custom towers that each has their own theme, one has a look of a alien head, much better than anything alienware can come up with and it pisses off my alienware buying buddy which is great, the other is a skyscraper I designed on my pc, I love both. If you have the ability and knowledge to build your own you would be stupid or lazy not to.
