Don't know who the textbook accredits it, but I'm sure that was the idea when man started living in communities together.

I think the bible says "A man is not an island unto himself." Same concept.

This quote relates to altruism, the belief that sacrificing yourself for the greater good is a fine idea. You actually see altruistic behavior in closely-related family groupings of many animals (squirrels, meercats, bees), and it's a biological concept that is as old as reproduction. So, pretty old.

It's very utilitarian. Look up philosophers of utilitarianism, such as Bentham and Mills.
