Well, you got it right and answered your own question. It is your duct work expanding and contracting. I'm guesing it's thin metal which expands with exposure to heat and contracts when the heat source is taken away.

Metal expands when it gets hot and contracts when cooling this is probably what you hear nothing to worry about You say it is off so it cant be anything running or turning in the system

i would not bypass up there: installation cameras in the bathing room and kitchen may be the suited guess. in case you do not see something on tape after an prolonged time, call exterminator and say that there are rats in the attic, he could discover a individual or he ought to discover that your subject became an animal all alongside (verify he exams any crawlspaces etc.) or you ought to in basic terms take place the warmth on your vents each of ways and that's going to be glaring if there's a individual in there. or you homestead must be haunted, it extremely is extremely helpful to go out in case you think in that kind of element.

If it was a recent install the ductwork may not be "cross-broke" or instulated properly. Either of those things can cause the ductwork to expand and "pop" or "bang" Have it checked out if it concerns you.

You might want to inspect the ductwork for proper insulation around it .Could be some bare spots -- exposing it to the air -- causing this "banging"; Secure any loose ductwork.
