"Miss Kate" has given the correct answer. Even though the "patient" is expected to die, everything should be done as close to medical best practices as possible.
In other words, a live person should NEVER be injected using a non-sterile needle, so, neither should a condemned person.
She is also correct in giving the political reasoning behind using the "best practices" methods.

Yes that does sound kinda pointless. I guess the reasoning is safety for the person(s) administering the injection. What if one of them gets stuck by accident?

Well, unless they re-used needles they would be sterilised when they came out of the packet.
Also, what if the prison wardens or the executioner pricked themselves by accident?
And it wouldn't be very safe having dirty needles lying around.
I'm sure there's a health and safety reason too!

because there is a regulation that requires ALL injections to be ginve with sterile needles....even lethal ones. That is why iv drug users that share needles can get charged wtih violating those laws and with endangerment fro sharing.....

needless to say, that is important. The ruling states that the prisoner ought to die via deadly injection, no longer an infection from a grimy needle. even however the tip result's the comparable, suits could be thrown.

Everything has to be medically "proper" when the state murders someone. Otherwise it might be considered cruel and unusual punishment. In otherwords, it helps politicians legitimize state sanctioned murder as punishment for the crimes of the person being killed, not some sort of sick vengence or an action as depraved as whatever the criminal did.

As an add to your question why not use the same needles and cut down on the expense.

even though they are going to die the government is still bound by law to ensure that they are treated ethically. now the questions comes up if killing another human being is ethical. there are many opinions but i believe as long as the crime fits the punishment. now there is another dilemma, who is worthy enough to say whether the crime fits the punishment.....and the questions can go on and on......

They don't want to infect with AIDS or some other pestilence any vampire later drinking the blood of the deceased.
