I am a trustee of a charity working with a community in Zimbabwe. So far a rural library has been started from the money I raised in a marathon. Now I am working on a music and dance talent show for young people up to the age 18. I have three age groups to cater for and I will be giving 1st 2nd and 3rd positions. Naturally it will make sense not to spend money on these but get them free as donations. Do not knwo where to start.

Count on Us was established in 2002 as a non-political, non-profit organisation designed to provide help and assistance wherever it is needed in our communities in Zimbabwe. We received full charitable status in June 2003. You might be able to obtain Sponsorship from them or donation in kind/services. What are the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions supposed to receive? A trophy, a sum of money to support education, clothing, books?

Follow the outline as you did with your marathon. You successfully raised money to open a rural library which is commendable. Do you have local charitable organizations/chapters that you could "partner" with to further your cause? Another option is to seek "sponsorship" from global corporations, i.e. McDonalds, CocaCola, Pepsi. These companies are warming to world charitable causes for which they support. You might contact Pepsi and inquire a donation from them. Generally corporate sponsors donate where their logo/product/service will be given attention. How would you promote or assist that company in promoting their logo/trademark if they were to sponsor your cause? Would you hold a "benefit" dinner, distribute their product at your event, is there any sort of "advertising promotion" you could assist them with if you partner with another larger charitable foundation?

The word is "prizes" not prices - that error may be costing you in missed answers. JFAD's answer was a load of yankee wankee cobblers. Ignore it, and the US multinationals suggestion, you'll get nowhere with all that.

The obvious answer is local businesses. When seeking freebies, tell the potential donors that they will get free publicity. At the event make sure that they get audibly mentioned. Mention them in any press releases, and in the printed programme for the evening. Ensure that either you get someone from the local press there to take photos and write an article, or alternatively you do that part yourselves (and send them a report). What would be even better is to invite a representative from each business to be there, and to give its prize to the winner (in front of the cameras).

Think about potential donor businesses - especially in relevance to the purpose of the event or the charity. From the little I know already the criteria could include: dance, Zimbabwe, library. Thus the links, no matter how tenuous, could be:

clothing shops (especially with dancewear)
travel agents (you have to travel long distance to Zimbabwe, after all)
ethnic crafts (especially African)
music shops (especially with African music)
bookshops (travel guides to Zimbabwe!)

However, you have to get out there and make direct and determined approaches.
