gemeinhardt is the brand that most people get and they are very reliable. i had a yamaha and the keys were always messed up. they either wouldn't press down or the wrong note would come out. i would go with gemeinhardt.

I personally prefer Yamaha flutes. I have taught flute for several years, and they have consistently held up better with fewer problems for my students that gemeinhardts. I have also personally owned both a gemeinhardt and a yamaha and preferred the sound produced by the yamaha.

In the end, it's all about preference, and which instrument works better for the player. WE are all different, so our opinions of which brand is better will vary.

If you are searching to BUY a flute, whether for yourself or for a family member, my suggestion is to try before you buy. Test the instruments to see what works best for you. If the instrument is for someone else, either have them test the instrument, or ask the local band directors or private flute instructors what they recommend.

They are both excellent flutes. Gemeinhardt is an older company, so it's more respected than Yamaha. However, Yamaha has a better embouchre hole, so it's easier to make sounds on it. It wouldn't make a big difference which one you chose. Just stay away from Armstrong and Bundy.
