She is 3 weeks old now, and she goes 3-3.5 hours, this includes feeding time and diaper changing, without sleeping. She has these long stretches of waking up twice a day. She will fall asleep for 10 mins, but then get up again. So within a given day, she will be awake for 6.5-8 hours a day. Is this normal for a 3 week year old?

Of course it's normal! Each child develops their own schedule. Good for you for letting her follow it. You should be thankful for the time you get to spend with her during the day. Many newborns aren't that alert yet.

What do you mean by "safe"? Do you mean okay or healthy? You will be depriving yourself of sleep (if you don't get 9 hours of sleep a night technically you are already sleep deprived, most people are). I mean you can go a day without sleep but you will cause sleep deprivation and you will eventually have to make up that rest. You have whats called a sleep debt. Lets say you normally get the full 9 hours a night, but you skip a night. That means your body has a sleep debt of 9 hours. So you have to sleep 9 hours before your body gets any adiquate rest. You have to pay back what you lost before you will be rested again and no longer sleep deprived. I have never gone a day without sleep, I always make sleeping a priority because of it's importance. Plus it's in most cases pointless to stay up all night studying. If you are doing work then that's a different story however studies have shown that when people stay up for long periods of time to do work the quality of work isn't as great and you aren't going to learn anything with craming. So most times it's pointless to stay up but hey sometimes it's might be what you need to do. You aren't going to die without a day of sleeping. Doctors will sometimes stay up for days on end working in the hospital so obviously you won't fall over dead but it's not good for you. -Connor

Only a doctor can tell you that your baby is okay, but my daughter slept so little as a baby I thought I'd reassure you that it's harmless - my daughter is 24 now and super bright and physically perfect. Maybe your baby is really smart too. My daughter could stay awake nearly all day at one year old. This much I know - 90% of the things that worried my about my new baby turned out to be nothing at all. Good luck with baby, and try to get someone else to hold her while YOU catch up on the sleep you're missing worrying about HER!

There is no normal with a baby! My daughter slept every other hour during the day and only for 2 hours at a time at night. Go with her schedule and she'll be just fine. Eventually she'll develop into a normal routine of 2 naps a day (one in the morning, and afternoon). Hang in there!

Some babys are just more alert than others, if she is sleeping well and undisturbed when she does sleep don't worry about it. As long as she's growing ,eating, and all the good stuff she's supposed to then it's all good.

Yep. And especially perfectly normal for yours. Its the pattern she has, she started developing it in the womb.
