I am 15 and i'm going choose my sixth form courses for next year. I want to choose Biology, Chemistry and Psycology, but i need a 4th subject that i can drop after year 12. Can anyone suggest any course that will help towards a future medical/health career? Then i am going on to study medical/other health-related-course in Uni. What career could i have with these qualifications?
Please help! I need to fill the 1st form before December 2006!

If you want to be a nurse, you need to pass your GCSE's (five of them). You can get into uni on these and a further ed course like an advanced GNVQ in health and social care, or you could do work-based training as a healthcare assistant at a hospital and get your NVQ level 2 and 3 in care (there are equivalents too).
If medical is what you are after, (Dr etc) you need pretty good marks in everything, the most appropriate courses would be biology, physics, chemistry, and maybe something like psychology would also be useful.
My advice to you is decide exactly what you want to do in the medical profession, then call a couple of universities for a prospectus and they will contain information on exactly what entry requirements are needed for the course you wanna do. You may get some ideas from these prospectuses on what course you may be interested in and what is available.................
I am a student nurse in my last year, and have friends from different areas of the medical profession. Maybe it's time to decide which area you want to go into as each is so very specialised, with very different training and entry requirements.
Nursing is a good choice!

Oh my god i know how you feel, i am 15 also and i didn't know where to start until my teacher helped my. A sixth form is like a carry on from school, you will only find people aged 16 - 18 there. a collage you will find people of all ages, people who want to carry on with education, or who want to maybe get promoted. and a uni is where people go to get higher qualifications, such as PHD's and diplomas.
EDIT: If i where you i would choose something you want to take like, for example hair or beauty, thats what i am going to do when i am at collage, just for a bit of fun really.

Maths is suitably scientific and proves that you are intelligent and capable with numbers. There are many reports of students not having the neccessary numerical skills when entering university. Alternatively to maths you could take a completely different subject such as a humanity. This would prove that you had a broad range of skills and interests and the point of AS levels is to allow students to broaden the range of courses that they study.

Hi Kate,
If you want to get into Medcine I would strongly advise Maths as a subject, it is often asked for in many of the medical or science based degrees and normally English.
Talk to your teachers or for medicine, phone the personnel dept at your local hospital, they are often very willing to advise youngsters about such things.
Good luck for the future.

Maths is a good choice if it's something that interests you, but don't feel forced to take something scientific. A language might be a good choice, but taking any non-science subject shows you have extra breadth, which won't do you any harm on med school applications.
