Where my boyfriend and I are staying theres 3 bedrooms, living room and kitchen. My boyfriend has only been using the living room heating since its an apartment. Anyway I have rabbits and they stay in a bedroom since the cold weather is approaching i'm worried they may get to cold. There is a smaller room with a small heater. It hasn't been used for who knows how long. I turned it up today to even see if it worked. (My boyfriend thoguht only the living room heat worked.)

Anyway, my question is, can you just turn heat on? the heater looks in good shape, its one of the heaters that goes along the floor about 3 feet long. Can I just turn it up little by little? It had a funny smell at first, it may be normal i've smelt it before when you first use your heat for the season. I just want to turn it on a little maybe to like 78 degrees or lower only for the rabbits.

Thanks

Any heater that hasn't been used for a while should be cleaned before you turn it on. If it's an electrical heater, vacuum it (gently!!) to get the dust off the coils so it doesn't smell funny when you turn it on. If it's a gas heater, check the pilot light and clean the vents. If there are air filters involved, change them before you start the heater up for the season.
You're lucky if the landlord lets you raise rabbits in an apartment. Most wouldn't!

It depends on whether it is gas or electric heat. From the way you described it, it sounds like an electric heater. Then the answer would be yes. The smell at first is the dust burning off. If it is gas though, you should have it checked out every year before you use it. It really isn't that expensive and it is better than killing the rabbits and yourself with carbon monoxide from an improper working heater.

Most heaters and furnaces smell a bit the first use of the season. It's usually the dust burning off.

If it's an electric heater, just make sure it's clean and unobstructed.

If it's a gas furnace, you may want to have a professional come out and give it the once over to change filters and fuses as needed.

From the description that you gave, I am assuming this an electric heater. If that is the case, I would check the cord , if it has one. When you turn it on, the coils will be burning off the dust and anything else that has accumulated over the year. There should be not problems once that happens. Keep them bunnies warm!!!!

shouldn't be a problem...
if you're worried, stick you head in the attic & watch as it fires up, with someone @ the t-stat ( to shut it off ) & a mobil phone connected to the house ( 911), & cell phone ( to call in fire from street).
