(actually there are more from the 50;s that are exceptional, the African Queen, War of the Worlds etc)

from the 40's
Mrs Miniver 1942
Dark Passage 1947
Wings and the Woman 1942
Fantasia 1940
Sherlock Holmes and the Pearl of Death 1944

from the 30's
The Wizard of Oz 1939
San Francisco 1936
The Merry Widow 1934
Fire fly 193?
Balalika 193?

choosing five all time greats from this list would depend on the genre of films you are interested in. This also leaves out one of my all time favorites from 1970 (since you said pre-1970 Darling Lili, which while a box office flop was probably one of the best films made)

There are also more from the 30's that were/are tremendous films.. Cairo, Rose Marie,
One Hour with You, Monte Carlo, etc etc.

2. Pillow Talk (Doris Day and Rock Hudson).

3. Niagara (Marilyn Monroe).

4. Let's Make Love (Marilyn Monroe).

5. Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (Joan Crawford and Bette Davis).
