Both CPU AND RAM need to be fast and 2GB is much better than 1GB

RAM and Processor speed are very important, and the video card is the most important of all. 2 GB is recommended for gaming. Gaming computers have to be very fast, or else you will only be able to play older games. The best processors are core 2 duo, you should get ddr2 800mhz ram, and a radeon 1900xtx video card if you can afford it.

The most important for 3D games is actually the video card, but hte RAM and processor are also important. I would spend my money getting a good video card and then upgrading the processor, I would only go to 2GB of RAM if you still have money to spend after the first two.

1G should be enough if you are running a lot of background processes, and to me any processor 1.9GHz or more should be enough
