There's a legend, I believe that because of his asceticism, he was visited by the tyrant Croesus who was impressed terribly by all this. Croesus (who was after all the richest most powerful magnate of his time) offered to grant Diogenes any wish his heart could desire. To which Mr. D replied "sure!..could you move a little way, you're blocking out the sun!" That's what I call asceticism with a big A!
