When the first emperor of China finished conquering China he wanted to protect his borders from raiding bands of invaders. The wall also created many small gate towns where trading could take place without allowing foreign merchants to actually enter china.

To keep the mongols out, they were raiding China's northern area where the emporor did not have good control and quick reaction time so he had the wall built to stop the raids, it also helped to consolidate his power.
