Please help:

I'm trying to hook up a fire alarm with three wires (Black - Hot, White-Nuetral, and Orange - Interconnect) to a fire wire system in my house which has Black, Red, Green, and Yellow). Which wires go to which?

What should I be checking for?

Black is almost always the HOT unless someone has wired something wrong. White is most likely neutral. Green should be ground. You can check this by using a meter set to AC. Meter the black to white, you should see around 110-120 volts. Meter the black to green, you should still see around 110-120 volts. Meter the white to green, you shouldn't see any volts. If you change the meter setting to continutity check and meter the white to green, you should see that as "closed". The yellow wire in your home is most likely the interconnect. You can meter that to white and green on the AC setting and shouldn't see any voltage.

I would confirm the above, but my best guess would be to wire the green AND the white to the white on your detector. Wire black to black, and yellow to orange. Then TEST the detectors. If one goes off, they should all go off.

If none of that works OR you do not have a meter, contact an electrician.

Are you using the alarm to trigger a central alarm system or as a stand alone?

The orange wire is likely the trigger and the black and white are line voltage. For stand alone, you dont need the orange wire connected.

If you have a volt meter, check for line voltage in the house wires. This will help you determine which wire is which.

do not do that. completely different system .you will cause problems for yourself..your homeowners insurance will not pay on a claim if you tampered with the system also...call the authorized alarm company to make the connection properly..you remind me of the typical homeowner (an idiot) trying to pinch pennies while endangering your home and the lives in it
