Bring up some topics (nothing controversial though...lol) Speak to your boyfreind, have him talk about his day or something else he is interested in. When they feel comfortable they will jump in.
Its easy to get a conversation going and keep people talking if you ask and say the right things. Make them part of the conversation. Ask them some basic questions...where they are from, how long they have been married, what do they do for work...then elaborate on those questions.
Example:
Mr "whatever" what do you do for work?
I work at "whatever" technologies.
Oh really, what do you do there?
If you know what hes talking about expand the conversation talk about it. If not ask him what it is exactly he does.
Remember they are probably just an unconfortable sitting there as you are...lol.

IF he is your boyfriend as you say and IF you value your relationship with him then you need to attend family dinners with him. Just because YOU feel awakward is no reason not to. If you marry this guy you will be tied to this "reserved" family for as long as you are married, it would be in YOUR best interest to learn how to tolerate a different lifestyle other than the one you are used to. If you can't then I would say that you are too immature to deal with committed relationships and should just stick with casual dating.

in my life experience ONLY a relationship never last when the man or women can not get along with the other persons parents. It's very important to date people from similar backgrounds with same values or it makes your life he*l. My 1st love ended because he knew his family would never accept me. Being socially compatible is very important for things to last in the long haul.

Not sure if this will help. I am the Chaplain of the Moonachie Fire Department and this is the Invocation prayer that I made for our dinner. Hope it helps. Fr. Ken Good Evening, Father, we once again thank you for this opportunity to gather here in fellowship. We give thanks for the blessings that this department has received, for its leaders, and for its membership, but most of all for its spirit. Lord, may everything that we do begin with your inspiration and continue with your help, so that all our work may begin in you and for your glory. We are grateful Lord for this opportunity to thank all our first responders, Firefighters, Police, EMS and all those who respond to the cries for help, across the country. But let us not forget our brothers and sisters who have answered their last alarm. Comfort their families O Lord. Gracious Father, bless the food we receive this evening as nourishment for our bodies, the stories told as nourishment for our minds and the fellowship we share as nourishment for our souls. We ask this in your name. Amen...

It would be a good lesson for you do go there and remain quiet and reserved. You are the guest, just speak when you are spoken to. It is not always necessary to be running your mouth. It is okay to be quiet and self-contained.

Personally I wouldn't go. I have better things to do with my time than to eat with people that have no personality and wonder what crawled up their butts.
