NO. Go with a Saturn Aura or Chevy Cobalt. GM is partners with Honda, Toyota, and soon to be Nissan. GM also uses Honda engines and engines from the World Engine Alliance. New Chryslers are just as good but the Saturn is the most appealing and the best deal.

Father owns a 95 protege 200,000KM has not replaced the timing belt. has done the starter, replaced 1 CVboot, 1 battery... Can't beat the protege...
the other people have no logic.
Saturn only uses the honda V6 in the Vue. Which is a cheap plastic car... GM lets honda use the durmax in the european civic - they have no other ties. Gm and Toyota run a joint plant in Cali which produces the pontiac Vibe - which is the same as a matrix or corolla. Nissan and GM have no ties and publicly stated the talks are DEAD.
In short alot of MISSinformation.
Buddy below is spewing alot of hot air. Mazda trucks in north america are ford rangers, at the end of the day they are ok. The mazda 6 uses the 3.0 ford V6, again it is not a bad engine. The protoge is MADE IN JAPAN, and still is, and uses MAZDA I4 engines - NO FORD. So before you comment smart guy who claims to know, try again. Ford has had a stake in mazda since the 70's.

Yes they are they are very dependable, and fun to drive! Just like any car it is only as dependable as the maintenance you perform. If you take care of the car it will take care of you. I would recommend one with a 2.0L engine this performs the best. A manual trans. helps to make it fun and save a little more gas, but an auto does come in handy. Now this is the turth Mazda is owned 40% by Ford. The Protege' is all Mazda! No Ford in it! And they stoped makeing it in '03.

All those answers are WRONG! If u want a good used car, NEVER buy Mazda from 99-07, they are run by Ford and Ford is a terrible car company! Buy (used): Honda Civic, Accord, CR-V or Toyota Corolla, Camry, Rav-4 or Subaru Legacy, Impreza. Any Japanese car company except Suzuki. If you want to save yourself from expensive repairs, stay away from Mazdas.
