People often look at history and culture more than the actual color of a person's skin when determining their "color". Black people are generally from Africa or the descendants of African slaves. White people are generally descended from Europeans. There is no separate category for Mediterranean, southeastern European or Middle Eastern people who are much darker than Northern Europeans but are from "civilized" countries. (I realize that there were great empires and civilizations in Africa but the original classification of Semites and other olive skinned people was based on European stereotypes). Everything that was in the old Roman Empire was considered white. The pale people of the empire married freely with the olive people of the empire and they have been basically separate from the darker gene pools south of the Sahara so they have more "white" genetic traits than "black" ones. Dividing people by race is not as simple as it seems. Many if not most hispanic people don't actually fit into any race category, which is one reason they have a separate category for them on most forms. Almost all hispanic people are descended from some combination of European and Native American ancestors with many having some African ancestors as well.

due to racism, many brown people would LIKE to be considered "white"
no human really is "white"
History is a mis-mash but the northern Arian invaders that moved south wanted to be treated better. For the obvious reasons of being the victors in many battles. The southern peoples tend to be darker. No known reason, except the sun is more intense near the equator.
Your friend looks to be part African .. but only she may know, and then again she may not.

She's not white. Ask yourself this, why do they
call black people black, and white people white?
The so-called whites are closer in actual flesh color
to pink than they are to whites, while people of African
descent are brown. The only thing black about black
people is the hair they have. There's nothing white
about so-called white people, unless their hair turns
white. I think in the case of these two races, the names
should be changed to better reflect their true color.
Black people are actually brown, and I've never seen
an actual black person, unless the person was burned
in a fire or something, and their skin is charcoaled.

This is an amazing question. I am Caucasian, yet I have Olive skin and dark hair. My husband is black and our children are, of course mixed. I am considered "white", yet my children are considered "black". SO, I suppose that it is simply best not to categorize people by color!
