A newborn will be nursing approximately every 2 hours around the clock. AT LEAST 8-12 feedings per day. I would not suggest introducing a bottle until 4-6 weeks, depending on how well nursing is going.

The link below has a milk calculator that will help you figure out how much expressed milk to put into a bottle.

If you are exclusively breastfeeding, there is no way to measure at first. If you can pump between 2 - 4 ounces, she probably won't take more than that at a feeding, if she takes the bottle.

If you pump every 2 hours, you may be able to guess how much the baby gets by the amount you can pump.

Start with a 4 ounce bottle (if you can get that much at this point in the game), see if she finishes the whole thing (doubtful), and feed her the same amount every 2 hours.

Wake the baby up to eat during the day, or you'll have a night eater!!!

My newborn would only eat 2-3 ozs at a time at the most, every 2-3 hours. I am breastfeeding also, I always have some formula with me in case of an emergency, my baby can only use Good Start and we have tried all kinds. Just remember if you are out and run out of milk, you always have more, just find a private place yo feed, dressing room, your car if need be. That is the advantage of breastfeeding, it is always with you, and it is more healthy, and free. I would find a formula that your baby can tolerate in case of emergencies. Good luck

When my daughter was a newborn... I remember her eating every 2-3 hours. She might be getting her days and nights mixed up, if she's not eating much during the day and sleeping more during the day than at night. Try waking her up during the day every 2-3 hours and feeding her.... then at night she won't be so hungry and maybe she'll sleep better for you. I know it sounds hard, waking her up to eat. When my daughter sleeps, that is "my" time. But it will help you in the long run. She will eventually start sleeping through the night. My daughter was sleeping through the night when she was 3 months old. Once you get her on schedule, don't wake her up during the night to eat, if she's hungry, she'll wake up. I hope this helped you. Have a good day.

When my son was a newborn I felt like the "all day buffet" since he was ALWAYS eating. I think every baby is different, but you should follow the previous advice of no more than 2 - 4 oz. per feeding if you're leaving the milk during an outing. Good luck!

They've always told me that you have to feed a newborn at least every 3 hours, I didn't really listen to that advice, somehow nature works great and when the baby grows well and has enough wet diapers I would feed totally on demand. If you need to pump I can advice you to store a lot in the form of ice cubes in your freezer so you always have enough for your baby.

According to the baby books I have, every 2 to 3 hours. If your baby is gaining weight properly you are doing the right thing. Keep the same schedule for the expressed breast milk.

You should be trying to fed your newborn every 2-3 hours. I nursed my son until he was 2 1/2 years old and I am 25 weeks pregnant wiith our 2nd son. I will nurse little Cody until he is ready to wean off of me.

JUST REMEMBER THAT BOTTLES ARE EASIER TO USE AND LESS WORK SO IF YOU GIVE THE BABY THE BOTTLE DON'T BE DISAPPOINTED WHEN THE BABY REFUSES THE BREAST. YOUR BABY HAS HER/ HIS DAYS AND NIGHT MIXED UP.
