Yes they are alike, both about pre-pubescent boys growing up. The Outsiders book was better than the movie though so I prefer Stand By Me. But I love both!

The stories are similar. But, The Outsiders deals more with gangs and bonds between brothers, where as, Stand By Me deals more with coming of age and learning to accept adulthood.
Personally, Stand By Me is my favorite. River Phoenix is my all-time favorite and this was the role that launched his career. I enjoyed the banter between the friends and the more modern feel of the story. IMO, The Outsiders is more of a period movie.

They are both coming of age dramas.... I think I prefer stand by me but it's a close race.

One's about a group of kids growing up(Fat Cushman, River Pheonix and Mouth), and the other is about social inequality(Greasers vs. Socials). Outsiders is a much better flick. Who can argue with that cast. Machio, Swayze, Cruise, Emilio ....."And I was like, EMILIO!!"

NO!THEY ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT.ONE IS ABOUT KIDS GOING TO SEE A DEAD BODY (STAND BY ME) AND THE OTHER IS ABOUT THE DIFFERENCES IN THE CLASSES OF
SOCIETY (THE OUTSIDERS).I LIKED THEM BOTH AND WHY
BECAUSE THEY'RE JUST GREAT MOVIES AND THE BOOK
WAS GREAT.STAND BY ME WAS TAKEN FROM A SHORT STORY FROM STEPHEN KING CALLED "THE BODY" FROM HIS "NIGHT SHIFT COLLECTION"
