How funny, I'm from Iowa and moved to So. Cal.
Yes, things are quite different there. Much slower paced. Not a lot of entertainment. But if your moving to a college town, thats a little different. There's always more to do by the schools. Just be prepared for the cold! Not like San Diego cold of 50 degrees, Iowa cold can be bone chilling! But the people are great. Much nicer than out here! Have fun!
P.S. send me some GOOD corn, haven't had a descent piece since I left!

Hehe, what isn't different should be your question!
I am from Iowa, where there are steamy summers with no rain and freezing winter with inches and inches of snow. But spring and fall bring the most fantastic weather in the country.
We don't have earthquakes or mudslides or forest fires, but we do have tornadoes and blizzards (which brings school cancellations) and drought.
Not too many vineyards in Iowa, but corn and beans! And don't forget the cows and tractors.
Small towns instead of huge cities. Of course, we have some cities, but not like LA or San Diego.
But we also have all sorts of sports and have some of the best schools and univerisities in the nation. We get to vote first and have a capitol building that is gold. Iowa is bordered by both the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Field of Dreams was filmed here.
Fort Dodge is a nice place. A girl I once coached in soccer went on to play soccer there.
I don't think you will have a hard time, not that there won't be rough times, but overall it will be a good experience. Forst Dodge won't be the same atmosphere that you have in San Diego, but it won't be like you are in a foreign country either. And we are centrally located between Chicago, Kansas City and Minneapolis. But Des Moines and Omaha, NE are even closer. They would be more like San Diego.
Iowa is the place where everyone waves at you (especially in the country), people still pull over for a funeral procession, hard work and dedication are still valued, where your word in your contract...I could go on and on.
I wouldn't dream of living anywhere else. It is quiet and calm here and there aren't too many problems...yet.
Let me know if you would like more info!

I actually lived in Fort Dodge for a minute many years ago. I wouldn't classify it as a college town unless you mean that you are going to the community college there.
The weather will probably be a shocker. I wouldn't describe FD as a cosmopolitan city. As I recall it's pretty white and laid back. It isn't too far from Ames (Iowa State Univ) and even Des Moines if you get starved for cultural activity. Then there's the twin cities in Minnesota if you want to venture a little farther. If you have friends and a job and are busy with school work, you probably will get along fine. Those things work just about anywhere you live.

I wouldn't go anywhere near until you find out what an Iowa is. Does it have Saints like Diego has or not. If your not having a hard time living in San Diego WHY move? You still have to cut the grass.

It will be very different. It is not multi cultural and the focus of life is still very inward. It is slow and very conservative. If this is good for you, then it should be fine.
