NFL. 85 Bears. They were so intimidating on defense, they were scary. I mean that, literally. They also were number 2 in the league in offense that year, with Jim McMahon at quarterback.
I offer this as proof.
In the playoffs they shut out the Giants. Then they shut out the Rams to win the NFC championship. Then they held NE to only 10 points in the Super Bowl.
You show me another team, you cant, that allowed only 10 points in a playoff run. That is incredible!

While the 72' Dolphins were indeed a great team, I would have to say the greatest American Football team was the Green Bay Packers led by Bart Starr that won the first two Super Bowls. Many of the players on the team arenow in the Hall of Fame and they were coached by possibly the greatest coach to ever grace the sidelines, Vince Lombardi. As far as the Cowboys, and their "America's Team" moniker, that team will always be mediocre at best until the ownership changes. I am an American, and personally, I can not stand the 'Boys.

In the NFL is a toss up between the 1979 Pittsburgh Steelers and the 1985 Chicago Bears.
In college no one comes close to the 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers. The greatest college football team in history. This team was so good it could have beaten several NFL teams during that season.

It's difficult to say, since there were so many great teams. The Steelers of the 70's were exceptional, as were the '85 Bears and the '86 Giants.

The 1985 Bears.
Although, by the end of this season, there's a good chance that the 2006 Bears could be considered the best of all time.

The best football team ever has got to be the 1972 Miami Dolphins. They are the only team to win all regular season and post season games.
