...more specifically, the MacBook.
Or is it just the lifetime of the battery?

I believe that you should be more concerned about the lifetime of the battery. A lifetime of a Mac is a long time. I have a Mac that was made pretty close to 1984 that still runs but won't print. I keep it for it's historical value. I know a lot of people who give away their computers because they have bought a more up-to-date Mac but none who's computer stopped working. I don't expect the MacBook will be any different. You will probably want to upgrade before the computer wears out.

The Macbook is new. It just depends on the hardware which you can always replace cheaper than buying new. If the battery dies, you can replace it or plug it in to use until you replace it.
