you can`t put a 1400 head on an 1800 block they are totally different, a 1600 on the other hand will fit absolutely no problem as the only difference is the size of the bores - if you mean the entire engine and not just the block then you can fit a 1.8 into a 1.4 but you will need all of the mounts and wiring and all parts like alternator and maybe even the power steering pump/pipes/rack etc as these will all be different - but it is possible - again a1.6 is far easier as its a straight swap nothing is different that you cannot swap from the 1.4 to the 1.6

It should - but you'll need the correct transmission (gearbox) and engine mounts, ancilliaries, electrics and electronics, instrument pack etc.
If you have (for example) a crash-damaged 1.8 Astra of similar age, that could be used as a source for all the parts. Otherwise, repair the 1.4, sell it and buy a 1.8.

I imagine it will, you have to check the code on your gearbox to see if it is the same as the one from the donor vehicle, I don't know the particular engine you are talking about but sometimes the difference in capacity on similar engines is longer crank, same bore, or same crank larger bore to get the extra 400cc, which is only 100cc per cylinder difference after all.
Just read Conor B's reply, he sounds like he knows what he is talking about so ignore my reply ;o)
