Personal cleanliness or household cleanliness or both... it is a matter of control. Sometimes our personal or professional lives are out of control or chaotic... being clean and keeping things neat and orderly are a way to gain some control over those parts of your life you can control. I've observed people who are freakishly neat and organized and have discovered that they have some seriously "out-of-control" issues going on elsewhere in their lives.

Do you mean compulsively clean vrs. messy sloth?

I think it's in the personality -- maybe a past life influence. Brothers & sisters from the same home can be so different.

Motivation is important. Wnen I am depressed I have to do something active: I clean something in the house, sew, or assist somebody who needs help and the feeling of despair goes away and is replaced by a calmness and feeling of satisfaction. That is not to say that people with clean houses are depressed -- just that I've found it to be a good method to raise my spirits.

I love to read but never feel like doing that when I'm depressed because it doesn't help me as I can't concentrate.

If being very clean causes the person distress, yet they still feel compelled to do it, they're probably dealing with some form of anxiety or other issue. However, if the person enjoys cleaning, or at least is comfortable with being very clean, there could be a variety of personal reasons which bring them comfort. I personally feel more relaxed, focused, and happier when my living space is clean, and it helps take my mind off of other things. Afterwards, I really feel like just letting out a sigh of relief. :)

-How you are raised.
-Personality disorders/anxiety disorders in the individual.
-I agree with the other guy who said it is a way to control some aspect of their life.
-I personally am in a better mood if I'm in a clean environment.

Cleanliness is next to godliness.
You have more friends if you smell good.
You have more dates if you smell good.
You are healthier if you are clean and so are your clothes and home.
