Nicholas Appert invented the tin can in 1803 or 1805. He collected a large cash award offer by napoleon for a method of preserving and carrying food by French troops. Cans were made of thick metal sheet and opened by a hammer and chisel. The metal became thinner and the first can opener was invented by an Englisman in 1855. An American, Ezra Warner, patented the first can opener in 1858. It was used in the Civil War. The familiar can opener with the rolling cutter was patented by William Lyman in 1870.

Yeah - tin cans were only invented so that people would have something to do with their otherwise useless tin openers.

Cans were invented first - to preserve food. They were so thick, they were opened by hammering. As the cans became thinner, can-openers were invented.
