Beware of getting pulled into doing something illegal and of becoming an alcoholic. Since a bootlegger illegally makes and/or sells alcoholic drinks it is highly likely that becoming their friend will drag you into their affairs.

I also think it means to beware of getting into a friendship with a dishonest person. Most 'bootleggers' were considered dishonest and criminal.

Bootleggers were booze smugglers back when Alcohol was illegal. Now you might be buddies with say, a drug dealer, but when it comes to your friendship and the drug dealing business, what do you think the dealer is going to choose? It's the same for a bootlegger.

hmm...

Bootleggers are people that sell things illegally or take things without permission of the owner. For example people who bootleg music or dvds. From that particular quote I get the message "Watch out who you are friends with because they make have alterior motives."
