I start decorating about a week before Christmas and take the decorations the week after New Years. I think way too many people start decorating too soon. When I was a young child, back in the early 50's, everyone in the family, on the day before Christmas would put up the wreaths on the doors, the candles in the windows, and there would be red and green crepe paper strung from the four corners of the living room to the center of the ceiling, where there would be a big red crepe paper bell hanging. We would make popcorn balls of many colors and we'd enjoy them while mom or my older sister would read stories about Christmas. (We didn't have a TV to watch, then, so this was very entertaining.) At 9 pm, on Christmas eve, all of us younger children were sent to bed. I haven't mentioned the Christmas tree yet because we were told that Santa Claus would bring us a nice one, along with our gifts if we were good.
Of course, our Mom and Dad and older brothers and sis would bring in the tree from the barn, that Dad and my brothers had cut down in the woods earlier that day, and they'd spend Christmas Eve decorating and putting the gifts under it. At 6 in the morning, Mom would call down for breakfast, nobody was allowed to look into the living room because the door was shut, until everyone had finished eating. Then, everyone would gather around the door and it would be opened and we would get to see the huge decorated tree with all the gifts under it for the first time. And there, on the table beside the tree, was a 1/2 empty glass of milk and some cookie crumbs and note from Santa thanking us for cookies. Then we proceeded to open our gifts, which were mostly homemade items, because we were quite poor, but those are the gifts that are appreciated and remembered most. Christmas these days is far too much commercialized, the good old days were much better.

At the beginning of December I make sure our house is extra clean. Then about two weeks before Christmas I start decorating our house by putting a Christmas wreath on the front door. After that I do some each day and take joy in it!

CHRISTMAS EVE!
Was tradditionally the day ,
we decked the Christmas tree

we started to decorated the house
NO earlier than the week before Christmas

although :
The decorated Advent Wreath is put up ,
On Sunday ,4 weeks before Christmas
( FOUR CANDLES)

The first candle is lit on that SUN DAY.
and an aditional candle, is lit every Sunday
all four
on are finally lit on Christmas eve

When the real stuff of Christmas begins !

But that was how we did it ,

if people want to be festive before these dates ,
i say let them be happy and enjoy it .

Christmas should be a time of joy and wonder .

I start decorating my home for the HOLIDAYS (not being a christianity-is-the-best religion bigot I recognize the validity of the many holidays that come in December and early January for many faiths) sometime in mid to late November. Usually the week of Thanksgiving.

Starting the weekend after Thanksgiving has been the way for me.Shopping on black friday with all the madness can be numbing on people.Taking the time to put up all those beautiful decorations has a calming effect for me and my family. On the other hand..it's your home and you do what makes you happy :) Happy holidays!

Can if you want to. It's your home. I start just as soon as the Thanksgiving turkey is cold. If you've got a lot of money tied up in decorations and you enjoy them who says they can only be out for a couple of weeks.
