I've written a children's story book called Sleepy Hebe and I want to find an illustrator. I love Mick Inkpen's work, so that's the sort of style I think would suit (especially the cat in "Nothing" - that's perfect). Can anyone help, either by putting me in touch with an illustrator they know, or pointing me at a website or something similar for aspiring illustrators? The book is aimed at the under 4s, and, I think has great merchandising opportunities, as it's the first of an intended series

Please be aware that a fee will need to be paid and that can be negotiated direct with the artist.

I am contacted alot to do this type of work but authors often forget that an artist has to do the work before the book is published and regardless if any copies are sold!

It can be difficult for all involved, especially if you want a particular style. You can have whatever you want, you just have to be prepared to pay for it.

I do work in the style of Jan Pienowski, and use acrylics and inks. I certainly come under aspiring illustrator and I'd be happy to help.
Other ways include - contacting publishing houses to see if they can put you in touch with illustrators on their books. A lot of freelancers sign up and leave examples of work with e.g. Penguin.
There are also exhibitions like Art in Action that have displays by illustrators. If you look it up there should be a list of artists/ illustrators.
There is also Artists and Illustrators magazine - available from most stationers and newsagents.
