Get a material safety data sheet on the product....it will tell you what precautions you need to take and what type of protective aparatus you need to use.
But for any petroleum based products or products that can be thinned down with a petroleum product ,you will need a filter mask,but you need to find out what the appropriate filters are needed to put in it.
HINT: For any product you are about to use and havent used before then ask the supplier for a material safety data sheet on it

Get a good one with the replaceable side cylinders. When you use it you should smell nothing.

& ventilate - laquer will get you "drunk" quick!
