As long as she understands NOT to put it in witht other fish! Betas are agressive towards other fish and will kill them.
A goldfish might be easier to care for, and won't fight other fish if she decided that she rally likes them. Be sure and check with the parents before giving live animals as a gift.
I think a low maintenance fish is a great idea for a gift for a girl this age. Bowl, goldfish (or beta) fish food, and a book on how to care for them would be good. Another idea would be a small water turtle with set up and book and turtle bowl. They are a little more fun than fish because they can at least be picked up, but are still easier to care for than a mammal like ahamster or such!

Bettas can live in pretty crappie conditions. I recommend them for anyone as a first pet. Just keep in mind that they can not be placed in a tank with other fish, not even other bettas. They are also called fighting fish. If you would like to mix them with other bettas, you can also get a tank seperator. I am pretty sure a fish would be enjoyed because I got one for a young kid in my family a few years back, and he liked it.

That sounds like a great gift for a 12 year old. My daughter is 11 & she loves hers!
You can get a whole Beta kit at the pet store for around $10 I think.

We sell Beta's at the craft store I work at. You can really get creative by getting a funky shaped bowl, and color coordinate the glass marbles or rocks to match the fish. I think it's a great gift. Beta's don't do much but look pretty, so it is kind of an accessory. I think she would like it and they are easy to care for.

What a cool idea!! I would think that she would love the idea. They have such beautiful betas to choose from and you can always get a beta container the same color as the fish. Have fun shopping.

it really depends on the girls personality , but yeah i think a Betta would be good. It would teach her responsibility. Cuz she would have to feed it regularly and stuff.

oh yes.... she is old enough to understand how to care for them. Tell her not to put a mirror near the bowl. Good luck!
