Why are the only two people that survive from Willard's brigade Willard and Lance? Obviously Willard is most suited for combat, but lance? All he was trying to do was escape (mentally). he wasn't suited at all. Why was he alive at the end while not even the captain was?

perhaps because he was the most believable character, or maybe the film is suggesting that only a madman could survive in Vietnam, like Kurtze, the drug-taking Lance, and at the end, even Willard went a little bonkers. hope that helped. :)
