I recommend Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. (There is a sequel called New Moon as well, if you become hooked to the characters like the rest of us.)

Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld (Uglies, Pretties, Specials)

I would suggest the rest of Sarah Dessen's books. (I love her!!!) Her newest is Just Listen.

Have you read What My Mother Doesn't Know or One of those Hideous Books Where the Mother dies? by Sonya Sones. She is great.

Joan Bauer is wonderful. My favorite is Hope Was Here. But all of them are good.

I enjoyed Hit the Road by Caroline B. Cooney

And I think you'll like I'd Tell You I Love You But then I'd Have To kill You By Ally Carter. It is about a girl, 15 or 16 I think, who goes to 'spy school' and knows 14 languages and how to fight and whatnot but is clueless when she falls in love with a boy!

If you've read The Giver, have you read the other two in the series: Gathering Blue, and Messenger? Both are excellent.

You might also try, So You Want to be a Wizard, by Diane Duane. Cornelia Funke writes extremely imaginative books such as The Thief Lord, Inkheart, and Inkspell.

If you like fantasy, you might want to try Tamora Pierce. Most of her books have a female protagonist, such as Alanna, the girl who dresses like a boy so she can train as a knight, but have elements of magic and fantasy in them as well.

Finally, don't be afraid to tackle some of the classics, such as Treasure Island, The Call of the Wild, Tom Sawyer, and the like. Sometimes, they are a little more difficult to read because of the writing style, but all are worth reading: They are not known as classics without reason!

Happy Reading!

I like to read classics and some good ones that I have read that may fall in the category you are looking for are:

Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen
- Elizabeth Bennet is the perfect heroine: intelligent, generous, sensible, incapable of jealousy or any other major sin. That makes her sound like an insufferable goody-goody, but the truth is she's a completely hip character, who if provoked is not above skewering her antagonist with a piece of her exceptionally sharp -- but always polite -- 18th century wit. The point is, you spend the whole book absolutely fixated on the critical question: will Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy hook up?

Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
- orphaned and penniless Jane Eyre is raised by her mean aunt who eventually sends her away to a school for orphans. She grows up facing many hardships to eventually become a governess which is not a very highly thought of position. She ends up falling in love with her employer, Mr. Rochester, who has a terrible secret that may ruin their chance for happiness.

Cold Sassy Tree - Olive Ann Burns
- coming of age story about a 14 yr old boy whose grandpa turns the town upside down when he marries a younger woman 3 weeks after his wife dies. Great story about life & death, love and honesty.

The Joy Luck Club - Amy Tan
- interwoven stories about four mothers and four daughters and the sometimes painful, often tender, and always deep connection between them.

Six Mo. To Live by Lurlene McDaniel

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Up a Road Slowly by Hunt
Going on Sixteen by Cavanna
Fifteen by Cleary
Little Women
The Diary of Anne Frank
Julie by Catherine Marshall
Hail, Hail Camp Timberwood by Ellen Conford (my fave at age 13,boy could I relate to the main character!)

Some good books that aren't necessarily girly but ones I think everyone should try reading:
Treasure Island
The Hobbit
In His Steps
Joshua series by Joseph Girzone
most importantly.....
The Bible. (new international version or the living version are the easiest)

I don't know if I would call this a girlish book (or a boyish book for that matter) but King Fortis the Brave is a great book with two very strong female characters. You'll find yourself having trouble putting the book down because you'll want to see what happens to Aimee and Gillian next.

Give it a try.
