Astronaut food is merely freeze-dried regular food that would normally need refrigeration. NASA cooks merely try to find food that still tastes good after being freeze dried. If you're looking to keep food fresh, you'll want to vacuum out all the air, and put it in an airtight pouch. Other things that astronauts use are common foods that do not require refrigeration, and can be found at any food store. They also avoid foods that leave excessive crumbs. for instance: pudding snack-packs are a popular food that could be taken into space. Another solution to preparing a meal that could be used in space, is to separate all the components into individual bags, and then the astronauts can later combine them into one meal. This avoids any chemical reactions the food has after being put together, so it can last longer.
