The worst case scenario is that you're deaf in that ear for some reason. Best case scenarios: you may have an ear infection, impacted earwax, something alien in the ear possibly against the eardrum, a (literal) bug in your ear, anything could be causing your distress.

Go to your doctor and have him/her look in your ear and see what's going on. Good luck.

Not working? Like, totally deaf? Well, otic nerve is damaged. Or some other part is damaged or deformed. Most of the ear is mechanical in nature - the opening channels sound waves to the ear drum, which vibrates against a series of bones, which vibrate against each other, and one touches the cochlea's membrane, which sets up vibrations in fluid, which causes cilia to wave, which activates the otic nerve, which runs to the brain. Lots could be wrong. Busted ear drum, fused bones, loose bones, damaged cochlea, damaged nerves....

Listening to music too loud, or being in an environment that has alot of noise.

Inside your ears are little hairs. Those hairs are sensors to the music. If you have been in a club, for example, and you can't hear after words, thats those hairs that have been basically blown down, like a wheat field after a huge wind storm.
