Louis XIV was a good king and perhaps the most absolute ruler there has ever been. During the afternoon he always took a "nap." While his courtiers were sleeping, thinking their king was too, he changed out of the court frippery into the clothing of the middle class buisness men and did actual work to help the kingdom. The only problem was that no one actually knew. His grandson, Louis XV, had only been taught how to keep control over the nobles, not manage the affairs of a nation.
This was not remedied by his advisors, who knew little more than he did, so Louis XVI knew little more than his predacesor did. He did want to help his people but he did not necessarily understand how.
I don't remember how the civil war began, but it is very clear it was because the people were in want. The taxes were continuously being raised to support the idiotic frivolities of the nobles. Gambling had become a huge fashion, especially for Marie Antionette. She did not care for her people. In fact, she was the one who said "Let them eat cake" when the people demanded food. Cake was the burnt crusts of bread that was cut off the nobles' bread and cast into the garbage heaps.
They, the royal family, were not very nice to the people in general. One of the things that made the people very angry was that Marie Anionette and her ladies in waiting would change out of their court dresses occasionally into mocked-up peasants dresses to play"milk-maids" in a little hut in the back of the Versaille gardens. Also, the royal family attempted to escape the city of Paris after the people had taken it. The all dressed up like peasants, smeared dirt on their faces, left their belongings behind, and tried to leave in their golden royal carriage. I don't remember much more.
