It is unethical to pay anyone for an interview. I've been a journalist for a long time and have never paid anyone and wouldn't!
However, some of the rags like National Inquirer have been known to pay people.

Some times the paper or news organization reporters work for pay for interviews. Like ABC paid Terry Irwin to be interviewed by Barbara Walters. But generally; no.

Well, pork chop, if your scatterbrained attempt at analysis had any value whatsoever, you would have to ask why the so-called Liberal Media is targeting Herman "Insane in the Membrane" Cain. They dont.
However, people who have been in unique situations (eg hostage) will tell media crew to buy their story.
Might work depending on the nature and interest of that particular case.
